In early 1991 I got interested in Unix security. Previously, I had worked on VMS machines, which did not seem to result in subpoenas from the FBI like Unix boxes did. (As a result of some punk trying to crack into Lawrence Livermore National Labs or Los Alamos National Labs, I can't remember which.). About the same time I read the 'Bastard Operator From Hell' series by Simon Travaglia. On a side note, a fellow geek I met through a mutual geek fried said that he knew Simon at the time he wrote the stories, and they're not too exagerrated.
Now, being the enterprising geek that I am, I registered bofh.com and bofh.net. Of course if I had actually been smart, I would have registered a few others like money.com or every four letter combination starting with W or K (radio stations). But, I digress... I ran this site for drumming up consulting business for a while, before I got tired of the work/money ratio.
(Ok, it wasn't that much work, but the money wasn't that good, and I was going to have to setup a business, and incorporate, and I decided it was easier to just fleece corporate America in the work force.)
For the record, rumors that several Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate students disappeared during my stay at the University of Arizona , Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are almost exagerrated.
Find out what is so amusing about the BOFH series.
